Announcement from Fonterra this morning was as expected;
This morning I wanted to let you know that we have revised the 2021/22 forecast Farmgate Milk Price range to $9.10 - $9.50 per kgMS from $9.30 - $9.90 per kgMS.
This means the midpoint, which you are paid off, has reduced by 30 cents to $9.30 per kgMS. You can find the latest Advance Schedule here.
This change is due to a number of recent events which have resulted in short-term impacts on global demand for dairy products. In particular, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China, the economic crisis in Sri Lanka and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
While the outlook for dairy remains positive and we expect global demand and supply to be more balanced over the rest of the year, these short-term impacts have flowed through to pricing on GDT. For example, average prices for whole milk powder have decreased by 18% over the past four events.
While I understand this will be disappointing news, the change in global dairy prices is coming off record high levels. At a $9.30 per kgMS midpoint, this would continue to be the highest forecast Farmgate Milk Price in our Co-op’s history. It would also see us contribute almost $14 billion into New Zealand’s economy through your milk price payments.
Looking out to the rest of the year, global milk production is expected to remain constrained as high feed, fertiliser and energy costs continue to impact production in the Northern Hemisphere. And we expect demand to recover as the short-term impacts begin to resolve.
While there is still a high level of uncertainty in global markets, the majority of your milk has been contracted for the season. It’s for this reason that we’ve made the decision to narrow our forecast range to +/- 20 cents.
There are a number of risks we are continuing to keep a close eye on, including potential impacts from inflationary pressures and rising interest rates, increased volatility as a result of high dairy prices, and further disruptions from COVID-19 and geopolitical events.
As always, we will keep you updated if anything changes, and we’ll be providing a full update on our third quarter performance at the end of this month.
